The Icd on Birch Lake was about 46" thick. You can drive anything on the lake.

Ice Museum

Sitting at the Ice bar waiting for our World Famous Appletini drinks served in ice martini glasses (OK, just kidding - we didn't order those!).Today, we went to the Chena Hot Springs Resort, about 90 minutes from Fairbanks (much shorter in summer we are sure without the icy roads). We visited the ice museum, which had some fabulous ice sculptures. We even tried out the ice beds in the ice hotel - doesn't sound like a good hotel to us! Then, we went swimming in the heated pool from the hot springs. The boys LOVED that. We couldn't swim in the outdoor natural springs as children are not allowed since they aren't clorinated. But, the indoor pool was tons of fun, and super warm, around 94 degrees. We had a good day.

Although the owner of the snowmobile tour company said he could take us all out on an adventure, with the boys both in front of him, we decided for safety to wait a few more years! They did enjoy pretending on the stopped machines. YG will probably try it out himself next weekend.Are you hungry?
When Kathy showed the boys the salmon the dogs eat, they immediately picked it up and tried to bring the rock hard frozen fish over to the dogs. We had to explain that it needed to be cooked first!SLED DOG ADVENTURE
We had a wonderful adventure in the sleds. The boys LOVED it! Kathy, our guide, was worried the speed would scare them, but our speed demons kept on asking to go FASTER! At the end, the boys each got to stand up on the runners in front of our two drivers and "Drive" the sleds up the hill. For the family photo, I was a bit worried that the dogs would take off with the 4 of us (and no driver), but Kathy promised that they wouldn't as long as I stood on the brake. Luckily, we didn't move as there is no way I could have driven this thing! This was a great experience, and well worth the trip to Fairbanks in winter.
